Primitive Way by bike
The oldest Camino and, by bike, the most demanding: from Oviedo to Santiago through the Asturian and Galician mountains. Pure nature, solitude and scenery for experienced cyclists.
Route: Oviedo (Asturias) → Santiago de Compostela
About this route
The Primitive Way is the original pilgrim route, the one King Alfonso II followed from Oviedo, and it keeps a mountainous, solitary essence that wins people over. It is also, by far, the toughest Camino to do by bike: it crosses the Cantabrian Mountains with long climbs, steep descents and stretches that force you to get off the bike. It is not a route for beginners, but it rewards you with some of the most spectacular scenery on the whole Camino.
The Hospitales Route
The most legendary section of the Primitive Way is the Hospitales Route, a high-mountain variant after Pola de Allande, along the ridgeline and with no services. It is beautiful, but it is designed for walking pilgrims: it is not cyclable.
By bike, the usual solution is to ride up the Puerto del Palo (over 1,100 metres) by local road, avoiding that section. You will gain in safety and spare yourself carrying the bike over impossible terrain.
Which bike to use
The MTB is the recommended option because of the amount of technical terrain and the steep gradients. A gravel bike is only advisable if you have good technical skills and travel light. This is not a Camino for a road bike or for anyone seeking comfort.
There are very demanding descents, such as the roughly 900-metre drop in barely 7 kilometres down to the Salime reservoir. Brakes in good condition and caution.
How many days
By bike it is usually completed in around 6–8 days for its roughly 315 km. The toughness lies in the elevation, not the mileage. The Primitive Way joins the French Way in Melide, already close to Santiago.
Best time and precautions
The best time is from late spring to autumn. It is best to avoid winter and days of dense fog in the high mountains. As there are long stretches with no shade or reliable services, set off with water, food, sun protection and a charged phone.
